Do’s and Don’ts of lost pets

Michigan Humane shares advice

July is Lost Pet Prevention Month, which is a time to raise awareness because losing a pet can be heartbreaking for the entire family.

Lidia Vesterfelt from Michigan Humane shared advice on preventing your pet from getting lost and what to do if they go missing.

When someone adopts a pet, it’s key to take steps to keep the animal safe and prevent them from getting lost. Lidia stressed the importance of microchipping dogs and cats.

It’s also important to have pets wear a collar with a tag that has their name, phone number, and address. Lidia explained that you can even attach an AirTag to your pet’s collar.

If your pet does get lost, you should check local shelters every day, report them missing to the microchip company, and utilize social media to get the word out, Lidia shared.

Lidia warned people not to forget to update their pet’s microchip when they move or if they change their phone number because it can make it harder to get your pet returned home if they go missing.

Michigan Humane also has multiple pets that are looking for their forever homes. Watch the video above to meet a dog named Suki that’s up for adoption, or click here to see other adoptable pets.
