It can be heartbreaking to hear about the number of pets waiting at shelters for their forever homes, but adoption isn’t the only way you can help. Instead, fostering can change the life of an animal in need.
Michigan Humane says it has a network of foster homes that helps thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits and more on their journey to a new home, and you can play a part.
Lidia Vesterfelt from Michigan Humane shared that around 50 percent of animals at Michigan Humane benefit from time in foster care.
Foster families are asked to provide a safe space for the animal to stay and TLC. Meanwhile, Michigan Humane supplies food, medicine, bedding, dishes, and more for the foster, Vesterfelt explained.
You can also offer short-term foster support with Dog Day Getaway and Canine Sleepover programs.
Fostering a pet provides them a break from the challenges of shelter life. Who knows, you might end up keeping your new furry friend and become a so-called “foster fail.”
If you’re looking to add a permanent furry friend to the family, Michigan Humane has multiple pets up for adoption, including a cat named Huey who is missing a leg. Watch the video above to meet him.
