Girls on the gridiron in Metro Detroit are showing that flag football isn’t just for the boys. Wildchild Athletics has a mission to empower young girls to get active and build their confidence while trying their hand at flag football.
Wildchild Athletics was brought to life by Candice Davis Price, a world champion medalist in track and field. Davis Price explained that she was inspired to start the flag football league after she was invited to play in a celebrity flag football game at the Super Bowl where she became the MVP. After that, Davis Price wanted to play more flag football. However, the long-time athlete said there weren’t places to play, so she decided to start a flag football league so that other girls could play the sport too.
“I want them to walk away with so much more than just athletic skills,” said Kori Desano Smith, the director of growth, development, and impact for Wildchild Athletics. “We want them to walk away with leadership, confidence, and a lot of them -- it’s their first time playing a sport or being on a team, so we want them to just know that it’s okay to take up space, know that it’s okay to be strong, know that it’s okay to make mistakes, and keep going,” she added.
Wildchild Athletics will be holding a Flag Football Jamboree from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 2. There’s a 25 dollar registration fee, and the event is for ages 7 to 18. The jamboree is taking place at 501 W. Columbia Ave. in Belleville. You can find more information by clicking here.
