Roller Skating has been a part of Detroit’s culture for decades. Many Detroiters, like Live in the D’s reporter April Morton, has been on skates since learning to walk. The city has its own style of skating called “Detroit Style Skate,” and now the world is catching on.
The style of skating has even become an official sport. “Under the umbrella of a ”Culture Roll," USA Roller Sports made it a sport in 2021....we’re getting somewhere,” said Patreze Brinkley, founder of “Detroit Stylin Skate Club.” She started the club shortly after Detroit-style skating became a sport, “We offer competitive and performance membership, we do one on one training,” she said about the non-profit.
Recently the club traveled to London, England to teach their skating style to skaters from across the world. They also showed off their skills through a historic performance while visiting the country.
The team stopped by Live in the D to share their experience.
