Parents face bittersweet back-to-college moments, navigating connections and letting go

Last-minute shopping runs and teary goodbyes never get old

It’s that time again — cars packed, emotions running high, and parents everywhere making the bittersweet journey to drop their kids off at college. Whether it’s the first time or the fourth, move-in day has parents catching flights and feelings.

For this edition of “What’s the Buzz” on “Live in the D,” the conversation focused on all things back-to-campus and how parents are really handling the transition.

“Live in the D” executive producer, Steve Lulgjuraj and fitness and nutrition expert, Jody Treirweiler talked about their excitement for back-to-school season.

“I’m excited for him, and I try to keep the focus about him. This is a whole new chapter, I think this should be an exciting time for everyone,” Treirweiler explained.

The conversation quickly turned to the expectations college kids owe their parents after move-in day. Should parents expect daily texts, weekly check-ins, or just trust that no news is good news?

“I get worried when there is no news surrounding my children,” Lulgjuraj said. He also mentioned how using technology like tracking apps has helped calm his anxiety while the kids are away.

The discussion also touched on the fine line between staying connected and overstepping. Is it fair for parents to keep tabs through social media or location trackers, or does that border on helicopter parenting?

Advice was shared for parents struggling to let go and for students feeling smothered by too much checking in. Finding a healthy balance between staying connected and giving space was emphasized as key for families.
