Diamonds aren’t the only way to make engagement rings sparkle

Birthstones are a popular alternative

Taylor Swift getting engaged and her flashy new ring might have you daydreaming about engagement rings. Diamonds might come to mind first, but other options are also grabbing attention.

Beyond the traditional diamond, emeralds and birthstones are popular picks, explained Lindsey Ford Dean with Abracadabra Jewelry in Ann Arbor, a shop that’s been around for more than 50 years.

Opals are also trending for engagement rings. However, Lindsey cautioned that they’re not the most ideal everyday stone.

“They’re pretty soft. In terms of everyday wear, they just don’t hold up very well,” she said while referring to opals.

The cut of the stone and the band are other factors to consider when it comes to picking an engagement ring.

“We are seeing a lot of elongated stones, so we’re seeing a lot of cushion cuts...Marquise is seeing a big comeback right now. Pear cuts are really popular, and we’re seeing some more of that nice, warm 18 karat yellow metal, but a little bit of everything,” Lindsey said.

Of course, it’s all about the happy couple and who will be wearing the ring.

“We see people bring an inspiration from everywhere, which is exciting,” Lindsey said.
