You might play fetch with your dog or give them special bones, but don’t forget about your cats because they need enrichment too.
Options for entertaining your cat stimulating their mind go beyond the basic toy wands and laser pointers.
“Different scents and sounds are always very good for cat toys,” explained Gillian Hanton with Michigan Humane.
Gillian stressed the importance of switching up your cat’s toy selection. She also offered a reminder that cats are natural hunters.
“Since their instinct is to hunt, we also recommend maybe leaving portions of their food around the house so they’re able to hunt for that like they would in the wild. It’s very enriching and really benefits their mind, and this can go for a cat of any age,” Gillian said.
Other suggestions from Michigan Humane include using cat puzzle feeders to turn mealtime into a challenge and providing a perch that allows your cat to look outside and feeds their curiosity.
