Tuskegee Airmen National Museum in Detroit offers youth pilot classes and beyond

Open House is being held on Sept. 4th from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Private pilot ground school classes, drone training, aircraft mechanics and other classes are being offered through the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum at the Coleman A. Young Airport in Detroit, and the opportunities are not just for adults.

The Tuskegee Airmen National Museum opened its doors in 1987 and was founded by original Tuskegee Airmen.

“Their goal was to tell the story of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, and then to inspire young people to pursue careers in aviation and now aerospace science,” explained Dr. Brian R. Smith, the executive director of the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum. “This year, we’ve graduated nine students who have their private pilot licenses, and they’re off to universities that have aviation programs,” he said.

The Tuskegee Airmen National Museum offers a variety of STEM and aviation programs, such as ground school to get a private pilot’s license.

All of the programs are free for children, thanks to donors from all over the world, explained Krystall Okebulu, the director of program innovation at the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum.

People have an opportunity to learn about the programs offered by the Tuskegee Airmen National Museum during an open house that’s being held Thursday, September 4th from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the museum, which is located at the Coleman A. Young Airport in Detroit. Watch the video above for additional information.
