On National Grandparents Day (September 7), the spotlight shines on an often-overlooked group of caregivers: grandparents stepping in as primary guardians for their grandchildren. With over 2.3 million grandparents nationwide taking on this role, the challenges and blessings are immense.
Appearing on “Live In The D,” Craig Nash, the founder of the nonprofit “It’s a Grand Life” shared his personal journey. “You take what life gives you,” said Nash, explaining how he and many others have embraced the responsibility of raising grandchildren due to various family circumstances. “You’re not going to let your grandkids go into foster care if you can help it.”
The organization provides crucial support, from housing assistance to school supplies. “It really depends on what the grandparent needs,” Nash noted, recalling a touching moment when a grandmother expressed her gratitude for receiving funds to buy school clothes for her three grandsons.
For those moved to help, donations can be made through their website, itsagrandlife.com. Visitors can also find additional resources and information on supporting grandfamilies.
