Scares, Tunes, and Truths: This Weekend’s Big Screen Highlights

A little something for everyone

If you’re looking for a horror flick this weekend, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” will be a popular choice. Movie reviewer Greg Russell, from Movie Show Plus, appeared on “Live In The D” for this week’s “Reel Talk” segment to dive into three different choices.

The latest installment of “The Conjuring” promises to deliver. “It’s based on true stories, which is always the scariest part about it,” Russell said. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or not, this film is sure to stir emotions.

The Broadway phenomenon “Hamilton” is now larger than life, with the big-screen adaptation of the hit play. “On the big screen, it’ll really get to you,” he said, adding that with its vibrant energy and compelling narrative, this is a must-watch for theater aficionados and newcomers alike.

Finally, a new Netflix documentary delves into the controversy surrounding actor Jussie Smollett. Best known for his role on Empire, Smollett was accused of staging a 2019 hate crime against himself in Chicago and later convicted for filing a false police report. The documentary, “The Truth About Jussie Smollett” takes a fresh look at the case. “I found it very, very compelling,” Russell said. He suggested it would be an ideal documentary for “group viewing,” as the film could spark some intense discussions.
