‘Magical Moments’ Toy Drive Marks 10 Years of Joy for Young Patients

Cornerstone Community Financial’s annual push fills hospital toy closets, fuels imagination for kids in cancer care

For a decade now, Cornerstone Community Financial Credit Union’s toy drive has turned beloved characters into much-needed comfort for children facing cancer and other serious illnesses. This year’s theme, “Magical Moments,” leans into storytelling - think Wicked, Star Wars, Frozen and Disney princesses - to spark creativity and give kids an escape during difficult days.

Appearing on “Live In The D,” Emily Morss of Cornerstone said the 10-year tradition grew from a simple idea: make it easy for members to give back. “No matter what your situation is, there’s always room for a little hope and a little magic, and that’s what we want to provide this time,” she said.

The drive stocks hospital toy closets with thousands of toys and books - more than 10,000 over the past decade - so kids can find that moment of joy in the middle of treatment.

Dr. Gianna Valenti, a pediatric oncologist at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, said the impact is immediate. “They’re allowed to really remind themselves that it’s okay to act and play like a child again,” she said, adding that play supports healing alongside therapies like art, yoga and pet therapy.

Donations will be doubled this year, stretching each gift further. To give or learn more, visit ccfinancial.com/magic.
