This race is all about fighting breast cancer

Susan G. Komen Detroit Race is Sept. 13th

There will be a sea of pink along the Detroit riverwalk when the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure gets underway this weekend.

Breast cancer survivors, family, and friends will come together to raise awareness and funds during the event at William G. Milliken State Park on Saturday, Sept. 13th.

“It’s so important because the Susan G. Komen race is not just a walk or a run. It really, literally, is a hope and action,” explained Dr. Michele D. Clark, LMSW, who is a breast cancer survivor and the CEO & founder of LIFT After Breast Cancer. “We’re able to come together, we get to honor the people who, unfortunately, that we’ve lost. We get a chance to celebrate survivors like myself, and also we get to donate and raise funds so that way we can get closer to that cure because every single step matters,” she said.

“Susan G. Komen is a national organization, so it lets people know that we’re here in Michigan and in Metro Detroit helping, but we’re also continuing to invest in breakthrough research, continuing to help advocate for health equity, and helping people overcome barriers to care,” said Susan G. Komen Development Director Ashleigh Dyer.

The Race for the Cure event starts at 7 a.m. on Sept. 13th. A Survivor Parade will be held at 8:15 a.m., followed by the Opening Ceremony at 9 a.m. The 5K and 1 mile race are set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
