It’s not just a fall fling anymore. Pumpkins are breaking out of October and cozying up to every season, thanks to a mashup of viral crafts, metallic glam, and the pumpkin-spice economy.
Local 4 Lifestyle Editor Jon Jordan dropped by “Live In The D” to make the case that the pumpkin has gone permanent. “Pumpkins are not seasonal. They are seasonless,” he said, noting a few forces behind the shift: Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte debut in 2003, the competitive wow-factor craft scene on social media, and a pandemic-era craving for “cozy comfort.”
Jordan rolled through examples that go way beyond jack-o’-lanterns: ceramic gourds that mimic cable-knit sweaters, glittered and sequined pumpkins, white varieties that slide neatly into winter decor, and oversized pieces that double as luminaries or even snowmen. Swap a black net for a silver bow and that Halloween pumpkin suddenly reads holiday centerpiece.
He also pointed to “Summerween,” a Gravity Falls-inspired trend retailers are happily feeding, as proof the pumpkin has shed its calendar. Subtle nods are everywhere, from pastel jars to pumpkin-shaped mugs that only reveal their influence on a closer look.
“Marketing trends forecast that the power of pumpkin is going to persist,” he said. Like it or not, the gourd has legs - and they’re not stopping at Thanksgiving.
