Reel Talk: Downton’s Curtain Call, A Creepy Kid, And A Jaw-Dropper Documentary

Fresh options for your weekend viewing

On this week’s Reel Talk on Live in the D, Movie Show Plus critic Greg Russell ran through a trio that spans corsets, creatures and a confounding true-crime tale.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale bows out with grace

The latest big-screen visit with the Crawleys aims for a grand finale, and longtime fans should exhale. “I talked to friends of mine who have been following this since it was a TV series, and they really enjoyed it and thought that they got everything together,” Russell said, adding that “it does make you feel like, okay, we’ve reached the end.” He tagged it with four reels and a shout to Paul Giamatti’s appearance.

Night terrors get real in a gnarly horror pick

A young boy named Mikey, a house full of monsters and a mother who may be possessed – Traumatika leans hard into dread. “This is just a whole intriguing movie,” Russell said. “It’s a psychological thriller, like something you haven’t seen.” He landed on three and a half reels, noting it’s tailor-made for horror hounds.

Unknown Number: The High School Catfish dials up the unthinkable on Netflix

The documentary zeroes in on a Michigan family where a teen and her boyfriend are terrorized by anonymous messages - until the sender’s identity upends everything. “This is scarier than the scary movie that we just talked about,” Russell said. “It will pull you in. You’ll just be like; I can’t believe it… Just watch it. Trust me. Just watch it.”
