In this week’s “What’s The Buzz” segment, the panel takes a dive into the world of bad bosses. If you’ve ever worked for a micromanager or a vanishing supervisor, this one’s for you! Joining the panel this week were comedian Dave Mishevitz and AJ Williams from the Michigan Chronicle. They dug into the four types of bad bosses - micromanagers, absentee leaders, boundaryless bosses and full-on ragers.
Mishevitz didn’t hesitate when asked which boss is the toughest. “The rager by far, because I don’t know that they’re dealing with their stuff and then to bring it into the mix,” he said. “I’m like, this is nothing to do with me, usually.”
Williams nodded to the chaos an absentee leader can create - especially when they pop in at the last minute. “They will be absentee, and then they show up at the last minute and they’re like, ‘Why isn’t all of this done?’” she said. “Well, ma’am or sir, you were not here for any type of direction.”
She also coined a familiar flavor of frustration: too many “chefs in the kitchen.” As Williams put it: “Give it to me to do, but then you want to take it back. Hand me the blender if you want me to make the cake.”
Beyond calling out the types, the duo shared survival tactics. Mishevitz keeps receipts to protect his peace. “I screenshot lots of little Teams messages… because you can tell me how great I’m doing. Then if it ever comes that I’m not, I’m going to—‘Oh, I let you know.’” And when dealing with the absentee set, he has a team-first mantra: “As long as on the back end of that, you use the word ‘we,’ then everything’s totally cool. We got it done.”
Their bottom line matched the segment’s takeaway: figure out which type of bad boss you’ve got, set boundaries where you can, and document like a pro. It won’t fix everything, but it just might save your sanity - and maybe even your sense of humor.
