Cheap vs. Frugal: Where’s the Line?

When “Saving” Costs More

Saving smart or just being stingy? That was the lively debate on Live in the D’s “What’s The Buzz,” where 96.3 WDVD’s Lauren Crocker (of Blaine and Lauren) and metro Detroit magician-comedian Jasen Magic unpacked the fine line between frugal and flat-out cheap.

Crocker drew a bright line at the tip jar and left room for savvy deal-hunting. “If you’re not tipping, you’re cheap right off the bat,” she said. “Frugal is being cheap but stylish and creative about it.”

The panel traded examples of where penny-pinching backfires - from flimsy work bags to bargain shoes - and agreed that sometimes paying more up front saves headaches later. Magic didn’t mince words, especially when it comes to having work done around your home. “If you want to pay for quality, get a quality contractor.”

Their bottom line? Be selective. Hunt the happy-hour deals, budget for the experiences that matter, and don’t skimp where it counts - especially when other people’s time and service are on the line.
