Verizon: Keeping Families Safe and Helping Veterans Eliminate Medical Debt

Using technology and teamwork to make a real impact

Verizon is pitching an easier way to keep households connected and safe this fall, and it’s not just for kids. During an appearance on “Live in the D,” Andy Brady, president of Verizon Great Lakes, walked through Family Plus, an app-driven hub to manage devices, content and even driving habits across the home.

“It gives you the ability not only to keep your family safe, but also really manage the Wi‑Fi, manage the websites you’re on, manage content [and] manage volume of usage,” Brady said.

Key features include:

- Home controls: Set content filters, pause Wi‑Fi and monitor screen time.

- Location alerts: Create geofences so you’re notified when kids arrive home from the bus.

- A “virtual home phone”: Route important calls—like from schools or doctors—to a single number that up to five family members can answer.

- Support for aging parents: Help reduce scam calls and centralize key contacts.

- Driving companion: Post-trip coaching flags speeding and hard braking to help new drivers build safer habits.

Brady framed Family Plus as a modern replacement for the old home phone, with tools that work for kids, adults and aging family members alike.

Separate from the app, Verizon is teaming up with the Detroit Lions to wipe out medical debt for veterans across Michigan. “For every Lions win this year, we’re giving $100,000 to pay off veterans’ medical debt,” Brady said. “You’ll get a letter in the mail that says your debt has been paid in full.”

Verizon is working with the Lions and ForgiveCo to identify and eliminate eligible debt. So far, the effort has erased about $9 million for roughly 6,000 veterans, with a commitment of $22 million overall. In Michigan alone, Brady said there’s about $15 million in veteran medical debt.
