When it comes to Michigan winters, your cars needs just as much prep as you do.
From batteries that struggle in the cold to windshield wipers that can’t handle the slush, now is the time to give your vehicle some winter TLC.
Jon Linkov, a deputy content editor for autos with Consumer Reports, shared suggestions for getting road-ready with checks and upgrades that can save you big headaches when the temperature drops.
First off, Linkov said to check the health of your vehicle’s battery.
“If your battery is four years old or older, it’s really time to definitely check it and possibly replace it, because a battery only lasts about five years until it’s not going to be dependable in winter extreme temperatures, but particularly cold weather,” Linkov said.
He explained that telltale signs of issues with your car’s battery include having trouble starting the vehicle and corrosion on the battery terminals.
Linkov recommends taking your vehicle to a mechanic to have the battery professionally tested. He said you can also check the date code on the top of the battery.
Something else for drivers to address is windshield wipers.
“First of all, they only last you about 6 months to 12 months at the most. You know, if you have a really hard winter, you’re going to really eat through them quickly,” Linkov said.
He suggests buying wiper blades in pairs.
You’ll also want to keep an eye on your tire pressure as the seasons change.
