Parents share their perspectives on homework

Is homework necessary?

The kids have been back to school for a couple of months, and those homework assignments may be piling up. It might have parents thinking about whether their kids are getting too much homework, or if they’d like to see them assigned more.

To talk about homework, “Live In The D” hosts Tati Amare and Kim DeGiulio were joined by “Live In The D” Executive Producer Steve Lulgjuraj who is a father of three and Vanessa Cohen, a mother of five and the creator of Motor City Date Night.

Steve explained that when his kids were in elementary school they had plenty of homework, but it started to wane when they were in junior high. He said that his two sons who now are in high school almost never get homework. Steve said he’s okay with it, especially because of extracurricular activities.

“One of my sons who’s in band - he’s up at the crack of dawn, he’s in school before 7 a.m., and they’ll have practice after school. My kid probably won’t get home on an average day until 7 o’clock at night, so it’s a good 12-hour day,” Steve said.

Vanessa nodded in agreement. She explained that her twins are in seventh grade and that they have a no-homework policy.

“If they do have homework, it’s residuals of what they didn’t finish from the day, and that’s the only time they have homework,” she said.

Vanessa also discussed teaching kids work-life balance.

“We don’t want the kids to be discouraged from learning. We don’t want them to resent it,” she said.
