The St. Brown Foundation, co-founded by Detroit Lions star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brothers - will host its first Detroit fundraiser, Strike for Literacy, on Nov. 3 at Five Iron Golf.
Amon-Ra’s brother, Osiris, joined us on Live in the D and talked about the importance of starting the foundation. “Really, it was about giving back,” said Osiris. “One of the things that our parents always emphasized was education. We’ve taken this opportunity to use education to hopefully change kids’ lives that don’t have as much access to resources.”
Set for 6-9 p.m. at Five Iron Golf, 600 W. Lafayette Blvd., Suite 5I, the “one-of-a-kind night” will feature bowling, golf, food and music. “The main cause is obviously to raise funds, but also it’s about bringing people together where we can have fun and kind of bond a little bit,” Osiris said. “We’d love to see as many people come and show up and show out because I know Detroit is a really, really strong fan base and they really come together.”
Proceeds will support programs including Rhymes with Reason, a web-based platform that uses popular music to build vocabulary and reading comprehension - now running in the ELA classrooms at Central-Durfee K-12 Campus.
“Rhymes with Reason is a web-based platform that teaches young people vocabulary and comprehension skills using lyrics and music,” said LaToyia Webb, principal of Central-Durfee, who also appeared on Live in the D. “The St. Brown Foundation generously covered 100 of our students, sixth and seventh graders, in our ELA classes.”
Webb said the program has energized classrooms. “They are studying the playlist, which is vocabulary words to the music of your popular artists,” she said.
