We’re one day out from the weekend so it’s time to check out what’s happening around the D. “Live in the D” reporter April Morton has some fun ideas for you and your family.
Up first, you can celebrate Native American Heritage Month at the Detroit Public Library. On Saturday November 8th, you can start with a creative and cultural story time at 3:30pm, followed by a bracelet making activity. Participants ages 8 to 13 can weave colorful bracelets using string and cardboard loom, inspired by traditional Native American craftsmanship. This event is happening at the Elmwood Park Branch on Chene, in Detroit.
Next, Detroit’s Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the city’s annual Fall Fest. This family-friendly event will feature pony rides, a petting zoo, corn maze, s’mores station, carnival games, and more. This year’s theme is Shrek and Renaissance Fair. The fun is happening Saturday, November 8th, from 1pm to 5pm, at the Williams Rec Center on Rosa Parks Blvd. in Detroit.
If you are looking to catch a show at the DSO this weekend, how about a mixture of compelling choral arrangements? That’s what’s happening in a performance titled “Carmina Burana”, featuring Detroit’s Audivi Choir. The arrangement was composed in 1935 and 1936 and is based on a medieval collection of poems about the ups and downs of fortune. The performances are Friday through Sunday, November 7th to the 9th.
You can get a headstart on your holiday shopping at the 41st annual Christmas in Clawson Craft Show. The event will feature one-of-a-kind, unique gifts. You’ll find everything from soaps, candles, and jewelry, to even furniture, all handmade by dozens of artists. The craft show is taking place this Saturday, November 8th, at Clawson Highschool, from 9am to 4pm.
Lastly, it’s been 50 years since the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and there are events happening to educate the community on the shipwreck. There will be a book talk, special tours, activities for all ages, and more. The historic events are happening Friday, November 7th through Monday November 10th at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, on Belle Isle.
