The Detroit Zoo’s after-dark tradition, Wild Lights, is back with millions of lights, animal-themed sculptures, festive displays and family-friendly attractions on select nights through Jan. 4, 2026.
Appearing on Live in the D, Emily O’Hara, the zoo’s senior director of guest experiences, said the team begins installing lights in late July, with a core crew of 15 staffers and support from guest relations, security and volunteers. “Wild Lights has become a tradition for a lot of families, and we change the footprint every year,” O’Hara said.
Visitors can expect wrapped trees, lit sculptures, live music and choirs, plus the carousel and a 4D screening of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. This year features the Art of Camouflage exhibit with quilt works highlighting animals’ natural disguises.
Interactive highlights include Stepping Tones — snowflake pads that chime as you walk — and a giant Light Brite-style wall. A must-see is the walk-through light tunnel, programmed to music with color shifts and animations.
Food and beverage offerings include a souvenir hot chocolate cup with free refills during the visit, along with an optional spiked version for adults.
