December is National Cat Lovers Month

Michigan Humane shares ways to celebrate

You might want to show your feline friends some extra love in honor of December being National Cat Lovers Month.

Lidia Vesterfelt appeared on “Live in the D” to highlight some ways you can celebrate National Cat Lovers Month.

Lidia explained the importance of playtime. The average adult cat needs 30 minutes of playtime per day, while kittens need 45-60 minutes. One way to celebrate is by getting your cat an early holiday gift, or by spending some extra time with a toy they already own.

Another way to care for cats is focusing on their enrichment, which not only reduces a cat’s stress and boredom, but can also help with destructive behaviors in the home. Food puzzles, pet-friendly plants such as silver vine or lemon grass, or catnip spray are all great enrichment options, according to Michigan Humane.

Michigan Humane also encourages pet parents to think about their cat’s health and wellness. You can do so by checking your cat’s records to confirm they are up to date on their vaccines and flea/tick treatment. Additionally, you can brush them to prevent matting and check the length of their nails to see if they need a trim.

If you don’t own a cat or you want to be involved in other ways, you can consider celebrating the cats in your community. You can become involved at a local animal shelter like Michigan Humane through fostering, volunteering, or donating supplies.

There are still plenty of cats who need a forever home, including one named Miss Kitty who is up for adoption through Michigan Humane. If you are interested in adopting Miss Kitty, the Mike Morse Law Firm will pay the standard adoption fees.
