Trends of 2025: What Sizzled, What Fizzled

Local 4 Lifestyle Editor Jon Jordan calls Art Deco the new vibe and says Marvel’s magic is waning

As 2025 winds down, Local 4 Lifestyle Editor Jon Jordan sorted the year’s winners and losers across fashion, home, screens and pop culture — and pointed to some surprises that may shape what’s next.

On fashion, Jordan said the Pantone pick Mocha Mousse made brown “the new black,” while debates raged over denim silhouettes. Tank tops surged from runways to red carpets, but Jordan questioned celebrity sway there. “I’m not sure that, you know, Kylie has that kind of influence,” he said, noting Kylie Jenner’s much-hyped $2 tank moment didn’t move his needle. He also said Black dandyism — the Met Gala’s theme — “has lots of legs,” citing how the aesthetic has shown up in major campaigns.

Inside the home, Jordan declared a shift away from recent staples. “Art deco is the new thing,” he said. “Mid-century modern is kind of stalling a little bit… [and] open concept isn’t selling like it used to,” he added, echoing what he said he’s hearing from real estate pros. Farmhouse chic? Likely fading.

On screens, Jordan said the year was heavy on hype with mixed results. He leaned into a comfort genre. British murder mysteries, he said, “they kind of do better than everybody else.” At the box office, he didn’t mince words: “There were some big bombs… The franchises that have always been reliable — Disney, the Marvel Universe — they’re kind of flailing… the audiences aren’t flocking like they were.”
