Detroit Youth Choir opens auditions, teases first-ever summer program

Group seeks talent with character as new Encore Youth Performing Arts initiative takes shape

The Detroit Youth Choir is opening auditions to the next wave of singers and performers while developing its first-ever summer program, the group announced in a recent appearance alongside two alumni.

During an appearance on Live in the D, artistic director Anthony White said the celebrated ensemble is looking for more than strong vocals at tryouts. “I’m looking for character. I’m looking for a good voice. I’m looking for some animated young people,” White said.

The choir, known for high-energy performances and opportunities that have taken members across the country and abroad.

White also previewed the Encore Youth Performing Arts summer program, the choir’s inaugural summer offering. Plans call for three locations and roughly 350 participants, he said, adding that details are still being finalized.

Open auditions are scheduled for Saturday, January 3, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Marygrove Conservancy, 8425 W. McNichols, Detroit, MI 48221, on the fourth floor of the main building (LA Building).
