Couple finds success with Mushroom Company

Mushroom Burgers are manufactured in Detroit’s Eastern Market

What started as a way to eat healthier during the pandemic has turned into a lucrative business for one Detroit-based family. Their “Mushroom Angel,” products can be found in seven states across the Midwest, and everything is manufactured right in the heart of the city.

“We are a small batch manufacturer, we think that that is a very important niche in Michigan,” said Dominque DaCruz, Founder and CFO of Mushroom Angel Company. He - along with his wife Wendy - package their mushroom products in an 1,800 square foot kitchen in Eastern Market. It’s all done by hand.

“It goes from, you know, raw food to a mixed batter, from a mixed batter to patties and ground, and then off to the various stores and restaurants within the area.”

They started the business in 2020 during the pandemic, after looking for healthier food options for their family. “We took meat and other sweets out of our diet, that led to some playing around with a home recipe of mushrooms.”

Dominique says Wendy perfected the recipe in their home kitchen, and it was so good, they decided to take it to market, and started selling their Mushroom Burgers in Eastern Market.

“The reviews were so positive, it really encouraged us because we thought, like, could this potentially be a fluke?” Wendy DaCruz, Founder and CEO of Mushroom Angel Company said. Before long, they were in several Meijer stores throughout the Midwest. Diners can also enjoy their Mushroom Smash Burgers at “Basblue Restaurant” in Detroit’s Midtown District.
