What’s Happening: A look at events around metro Detroit this weekend

Fire, ice, hoops and automobiles highlight events you can enjoy

From riverfront ice sculptures to basketball wizardry, metro Detroit’s weekend calendar is packed.

The Fire and Ice Festival returns to Robert C. Valade Park on the Detroit riverfront Saturday and Sunday, bringing an ice carving competition, live entertainment — including a performance by Flames and Dames — family activities, games, barbecue and more. With winter temps finally cooperating, the sculptures should hold their shape all weekend.

The Harlem Globetrotters bring their 100th-anniversary tour to Little Caesars Arena at 2 p.m. Saturday, showcasing the team’s signature blend of tricks, comedy and on-court flair.

In West Bloomfield, Friendship Circle’s Soul Gallery (5586 Drake Rd.) debuts “Look Up,” a new exhibit created by artists with special needs and inspired by space, skies and cosmic landscapes — with majestic eagles among the motifs. Six artists spent 79 hours crafting a chandelier of crystal teardrops that shimmer like falling rain. Artworks are for sale, and the show runs through May.

And it’s the last chance to catch the Detroit Auto Show at Huntington Place; the bright lights dim Sunday. The indoor showcase offers a warm refuge for car lovers eyeing the latest models.
