He’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame, has a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Hollywood star, all while bringing decades of funk to music fans, and now the legendary George Clinton is preparing to take the stage for a one-of-a-kind performance in Detroit.
The Detroit Opera House will be filled with funk fans for Symphonic PFunk: Celebrating the Music of Parliament Funkadelic. The show will include a performance by the Detroit Opera Orchestra, led by conductor Ray Chew. It will be the first time that Clinton’s songs will be performed live with a full orchestra.
“The one thing it does is it continues the legacy of P. Funk, George Clinton, and all of the fans. The fans drive the energy for this thing, so you’re going to feel it in the air,” Chew said.
Known as “The Godfather of Funk”, Clinton has revolutionized funk and R&B, while creating music that transcends generations. His music has been sampled by fellow artists from Snoop Dogg to Dr. Dre.
“It means a lot because that means that the funk will live on. The DNA of funk is in everything, so I’m so proud of that,” Clinton said.
The Symphonic PFunk concert is happening Saturday, Jan. 31st at 8 p.m. at the Detroit Opera House with Detroit being a special place to Clinton who was presented with the Spirit of Detroit Award.
