Keep your pet’s teeth shining bright

Dental health goes beyond brushing your pet’s teeth

February is Pet Dental Health Month, which serves as a reminder about the importance of keeping your pet’s teeth in tip-top shape to help make sure they have a happy, healthy life.

Lidia Vesterfelt with Michigan Humane appeared on “Live In The D” to share oral health tips for your pets.

Michigan Humane stresses to consistently brush your pet’s teeth to help remove plaque and prevent dental diseases. Dental chews can also help scrape plaque and relieve boredom.

It’s important to check your pet’s lips and gums to detect health issues. Healthy gums should be a pink color. However, white, red, or swollen gums can be a sign of an issue.

Michigan Humane also stresses the importance of annual checkups with the vet.

If you’re looking to add a furry friend to the family, Michigan Humane has multiple pets who need a forever home. One of them is a cat named Cookie.

“She is a nine-month-old female, and Cookie is a special cat,” Vesterfelt said. “She is a wobbly cat. She has cerebellar hypoplasia, which means that her cerebellum in her brain that controls your balance did not develop fully before she was born.

Vesterfelt explained that when Cookie walks, she’s a little bit off balance, hence the name wobbly cat syndrome.

“It does not hurt her. She’s going to be able to still live a long and happy life, but that does make her a little bit unique,” she said.

Vesterfelt said that Cookie will need a home that is more childproof than usual because she does have a tendency to fall down.

Our sponsor, the Mike Morse Law Firm, will pay the standard adoption fees for whoever adopts Cookie.
