Detroit – Big Sean and Usher are creating a buzz in Detroit this week with the launch of the new Boys and Girls Club at Michigan Central. The music artists donated $1 million toward the Detroit Entertainment Innovation Incubator inside the Boys and Girls Club.
During a press conference this week, the duo explained why Detroit was chosen to house this state-of-the-art facility. “Growing up in Detroit it always was like everyone leave Detroit for the opportunity, but this is people coming, that boy Usher came to the city, right, to do this,” said Rapper/Musician, Big Sean. “What I love about this city is that it takes ownership of its history, and what I think is happening here, what I know is happening here, is just reminding the rest of the world of what has happened here and what will continue to happen when we all come together,” said Singer/Entertainer Usher.
Live in the D Reporter, April Morton, stopped by the brand-new club to give people a sneak peek at what it has to offer Detroit youth. “Everything from fashion, wardrobe, design, you have prosthetics, makeup, hair. literally anything you can dream of from a production standpoint is up here, but we also have the literary arts, Shaka Senghor literary lounge is up here, you have to still understand how to write from a creative standpoint, said Shawn Wilson, President and CEO of Boys and Girls Club of Greater Detroit.
The 15,000 square foot facility also has a full production studio. “So you’re literally in the SparkLab Studios, which is a combination of the work that both Big Sean and Usher have been doing in Boys and Girls Clubs already, but this is them coming together... everything from if you want to do a sports show or if you want to film a movie like Avatar or, you know, Wakanda, any of those movies, they can literally create the virtual worlds that they can dream up," Wilson said.
The Boys and Girls Club is for youth ages 14 to 24. This club at Michigan Central is accepting applications for their programs.
