An entry-level mechanic who worked his way up to owning two Tuffy Auto Service franchises in metro Detroit is the January 2026 Ace of Trades honoree, recognized by Carhartt and Local 4 for excellence in the skilled trades.
“Congratulations on behalf of Carhartt and Local 4 in recognition for dedication to your craft,” said Brendan Lokes, Carhartt’s senior manager of brand media, influencer and partnership marketing, during an appearance on Live in the D. “Thank you for all your hard work and congratulations.”
Braun said he pivoted to service work during a slowdown at a prototype shop in 2007 and never imagined it would lead to business ownership. The career, he added, has given him balance and flexibility. “I’m able to take time off and be with the kids and see them in their school events, football games and band concerts,” Braun said.
His friend and nominator, Chuck Felker, called Braun a steady, community-first leader. “He’s that guy that just does things for everybody, but doesn’t really ask for anything in return,” Felker said. “He’s a very successful businessman but he stayed humble… he does a wonderful job of keeping everybody together and encouraging others.”
The honor also spotlights Carhartt’s “Made Possible” campaign, which celebrates the workers behind marquee moments in sports, entertainment, agriculture and the trades. “It’s really all about highlighting the people behind the scenes that are putting in the work to make sure that our iconic and beloved events… actually happen,” Lokes said, adding the next chapter this spring will focus on “the hard-working men and women that make the Americas outdoors possible.”
Asked what he’d tell anyone considering a trade, Braun didn’t hesitate: “I’d say just do it. Get out there, try something. There’s many entry-level positions in the trades… It’s a good way to make a living and work with your hands.”
