Customizable skin-resurfacing treatment aims to cut downtime from weeks to days

New Helix CO2 laser promises faster recovery at Northville Beauty Spa

A new, customizable CO2 laser treatment called Helix CO2 is drawing attention for offering skin resurfacing with less downtime, according to Northville Beauty Spa’s Dr. James Bazzi.

“This is a skin resurfacing device,” Bazzi said during an appearance on Live in the D. “It delivers thermal energy to allow us to have skin rejuvenation.”

Bazzi said a typical session lasts about 30 minutes, or roughly 45 minutes with numbing. The device is designed to target a range of concerns - including collagen and elastin support, acne scars, surgical scars, pigmentation, and tone and texture issues such as fine and deep lines.

Traditional CO2 lasers were often “one-size-fits-all” with lengthy recovery, Bazzi said. “The Helix is a customizable CO2 device, which means we can customize it to treat different skin concerns. And the downtime is much improved or much less than the traditional CO2,” he said. For pigmentation settings, recovery is often one to three days, and higher-intensity treatments may require about a week.

Bazzi said the spa offers free consultations to assess candidacy, noting that the device’s flexibility allows treatment across many skin types. “Come in, sit down and ask us. We’ll look at the skin, we can evaluate things, talk about some history and then determine if it’s the right option for you,” he said.

As for comfort, Bazzi said most patients tolerate the procedure well. “We numb very, very well. We have a very special numbing cocktail that we use, and we can even do injectable numbing,” he said, adding that the system’s design typically avoids the need for pain medications. Patients receive detailed post-care instructions.

Bazzi, who also trains for Allergan — the company behind Botox and JUVÉDERM - framed lasers as a deeper complement to injectables and medical-grade skincare. “Fillers and Botox, they’re fantastic products. I love them, I do them day in and day out. But they only do so much,” he said. “We have to take care of our skin, and that’s where lasers come into play.” Patients can still undergo laser treatments if they have Botox or fillers, he added, with timing spaced appropriately.
