Crowd Spills Into Streets After Fight At Joe Dumars Fieldhouse

Party Gets Out Of Control

DETROIT – Police from six cities were called in Sunday morning to quell a mob of more than 500 teenagers at the Joe Dumars Fieldhouse in Detroit.

The group were partygoers for an advertised "snow white" party. Sources told Local 4 a fight erupted between two rival gangs and the crowd spilled over Eight Mile Road and into a nearby neighborhood.

Police from Detroit, Ferndale, Oak Park, Hazel Park, Royal Oak and Birmingham responded. Two Ferndale officers suffered minor injuries.

"I heard shooting. I came outside and there was like a million and one police," said Ayiana Johnson, who lives near the fieldhouse. "They were everywhere, just walking up and down our block."

Johnson said trouble often follows parties at the fieldhouse.

"Every time there's a party, it's something, shoot-outs, fights," she said.

Police said some of the fighting was captured on a nearby gas station's surveillance cameras and is being reviewed.

The manager of that Mobil station said he had to close early because the fighting was out of control.

"We just closed the door and watched everything," the manager said.

The fieldhouse sent the following statement to Local 4:

'The safety of patrons is our first and foremost priority. Our organization has a long and successful history of providing safe, secure and enjoyable recreational opportunities to people throughout southeast Michigan. During the evening in question, a private company rented our space for a private outdoor event. The operator of the vent contracted over 20 licensed, private security guards."
