Police said 43-year-old Eric Ostdiek was operating the golf cart when he drove through the tee box and started down a hill to retrieve an errant ball.

Investigators said Ostdiek swerved to avoid a steep drop off on the course when he turned the wheel sharply. The cart rolled over and landed on top of him. He died on the way to a local hospital.

"When I saw him last week ... that morning it was raining and I said, 'You're not going to play golf today.' He said, 'Yes I am!'" said Ostdiek's 14-year coworker Pamela Bard.

Bard said golf was more than just a hobby for Ostdiek. She said he was the head coach of the Southfield High School boys golf team

"Golf was his game," Bard said. "His students on the golf team regarded him as their father."

A 41-year-old passenger in the cart also was hurt, but has been released from a hospital with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
