His mother, Carol Smith, said her son was taking time off from college to take care of her after an accident.

"I couldn't even walk. He would pick me up and put me in the car and take me to the doctor and wait on me," she said.

Darryl Smith said he was watching a baseball game with his son that night when he told him he would be right back and left the house. He was found dead a short time later.

His parents said they don't know why someone would want to hurt their son. They said he wasn't into drugs and didn't hang with a rough crowd.

"It's not fair. It's not fair to the parents. It's not fair to the family. For what?" Carol Smith said.

The grieving mother said she's making a public plea for anyone who knows anything about the shooting to come forward.

"You have to put yourself that what if it was your son?" she said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward in the case.
