DEA Impostors Target Online Prescription Drug Buyers

DETROIT – Buying prescription drugs online could make you a target of a new scam.

Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Rich Isaacson said he has seen the scam happen first-hand to consumers in Metro Detroit.

Isaacson said impostors, pretending to be with the DEA, have been using fear tactics and threats when calling or emailing people who have purchased prescription drugs on the Internet.

He said impostors tell the consumers that their purchases were illegal, which is false. However, the fake agents persist and tell the scam victim that money must be wired in order for them to avoid trouble with the DEA.

"We do not call people over the phone or contact them on email," Isaacson said. "The DEA would never contact someone from the general public and demand money."

Isaacson said anyone who receives a phone call or email from a "DEA agent" or someone "from the DEA" should know it is a scam.

He said if anyone receives this type of call or email that he or she should contact the DEA immediately.

"Rest assured, the DEA ... we are not calling the general public asking for money. That's just not how we operate," he said. "Just look online for a local DEA office, give us a call and we can handle the rest."
