DETROIT – Relatives of a 37-year-old Detroit man said he was gunned down Monday morning trying to protect his friend during a carjacking.
Greg Edwards said his son, Brandon Johnson, was was shot about 3:30 a.m. while getting out of a car in an apartment complex in the 500 block of Chene Street. Edwards said police told him Johnson was shot by a would-be carjacker, and that his son was trying to stop the carjacker from pointing a gun at a woman who was in the driver's seat. Police said the woman, and another man in the car, were not hurt.

"I'm heartbroken," Edwards said.
The gunshots awoke Johnson's grandmother, Amanda Edwards, who lives next door.
"I heard two shots about 3:20 a.m., but I didn't know what happened," she said.
Johnson's sister, Monica Harris, said he brother was married with a 7-year-old girl.
"My brother was a loving man," she said. "He was a family man. He loved his family."
Johnson worked at Henry Ford Hospital.
Detroit police continue to search for the gunman. They said they believe the attack was random.
