Recently, Mort planned the adventure of a life time: flying his small, two seat, Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) on a 74-hundred mile trip around the US to celebrate his 74th birthday. He made the trip solo, camping in a back-packers tent and using a light weight folding bicycle for ground transportation. The airplane, when empty, weighed a mere 650 pounds - roughly about the same weight as the aircraft flown by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk - and is capable of carrying that amount in fuel, passengers and cargo. Mort?s plane is dubbed TWA for Teeny Weeny Airlines.
After successfully overcome two bouts of cancer, Mort said he wanted to prove that neither age nor health challenges necessarily need to keep us from pursuing our dreams - an adventure for his "bucket list".
Mort shares his entire journey with viewers on Local 4. His special, "Flight Level Seven Four and Still Climbing", will air at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9 only on Local 4.
