Family Speaks Out About Baby's Death

15-Month-Old Girl Dies When She Gets Tangled In Blinds

CHESTERFIELD, Mich. – A day after losing their 1-year-old in a tragic window blinds accident, a metro Detroit family is speaking out and hoping to make sure the accident doesn't happen to anyone else.

LaJean Maxwell said her 15-month-old granddaughter, Myka Horton, was a joy to the family. Maxwell said Myka loved dressing up as a princess and playing in her new pink tent castle.

"She loved to run in and out. We have a picture of her with that costume on. She was just playing in it the night before. She was a very, very happy baby," Maxwell said.

But on Wednesday, Myka's mother found her tangled and unresponsive in blind cords inside the family's Chesterfield apartment. She was later pronounced dead.

"My daughter is devastated. We took her to the hospital last night and she was sedated, and she's been sedated twice," Maxwell said.

The grieving grandmother said Myka's 5-year-old brother and 2-year-old sister already miss her.

Maxwell said she is angry at the Aspen Creek Apartment complex because she said most of the blinds have handles, not rope cords.

"It's dangerous to have ropes on the blind and you have children," Maxwell said. "It's a horrible tragedy and I just wouldn't want to see another family have to go through it. That's why everyone should be aware about the blindssituation, and, if they have them in this complex, they all should be removed," she said.

Management for the apartment complex declined to comment.
