Detroit Police Department Board of Commissioners meeting following suspensions

17 officers suspended after leaving posts Friday

DETROIT – The Detroit Police Department Board of Commissioners will hold a meeting Tuesday afternoon to discussion the suspension of 17 officers following a "sickout" staged Friday.

Chief Ralph Godbee said Monday that during an internal investigation into the incident, "the involved officers have been suspended pending the final results of the Internal Affairs investigation."

The officers left their posts between 5:30 and 8 p.m. Friday, Godbee said.

He said they are now "alleged to be in violation" of a Michigan law called "Participation in a Strike."

"The allegations, if founded, are a breach of the public trust and as such presented a very dangerous situation for citizens of the city of Detroit and members of the Detroit Police Department," Godbee said in a statement.

The chief released a YouTube video Friday that he posted on his Facebook page Monday in which he addresses the frustrations of the police force members.
