TAYLOR, Mich. – A 20-year-old Taylor man was killed Tuesday night when his garage exploded.
The man and two others were inside the garage in the 5900 block of McGuire Street in Taylor. Police said the explosion happened just after 8 p.m.
The man's name was being withheld until family members were notified.
"I was thinking it could be something blowing up and then I looked outside and it was," said Barry Wilburn, a neighbor.
Wilburn captured the aftermath with his camera.
Police said the two survivors said there was a wood-burning stove inside the garage and one of them poured gasoline on the fire causing the explosion.
"There were some area kids that were very interested in working on cars and they would gather and work on vehicles," said Taylor Fire Chief Robert Tompos.
A 17-year-old Taylor man and a 19-year-old Taylor woman were the survivors. They were being treated for serious burn injuries at Detroit Receiving Hospital.
"It looks like they may have been using it to clean auto parts or to use it while repairing an automobile and (the gasoline) was an ignition source," said Tompos. "And when it came in contact with the vapors it caused a small explosion, caused a collapse and trapped one of them."
