DETROIT – Murders, carjackings and disturbing attacks: Crimes creating fear in Detroit.

"When violence impacts the innocent lives of our children and our seniors, it's gone too far," said Detroit Mayor Dave Bing Wednesday night in his annual State of the City speech. "Detroiters and visitors deserve to be safe in and around our city."

Now, Detroiters are taking action.

A crowd gathered Thursday night at the Northwest Activity Center as the Detroit 300, a city patrol group, swore in more than 300 new members.

This coming after the mayor's urging for more residents to join such volunteer neighborhood watch groups.

"We can longer tolerate this terrorism in our city," Bing said Wednesday. "And tonight, I want to thank the dedicated partners and the various community radio patrol groups. I encourage all Detroiters to join them in protecting our neighborhoods and demanding a better quality of life."

Thursday's membership swelling was the largest number of volunteers that the Detroit 300 has ever recruited in one night.

"Tired of just hearing the babies being killed and that the community is being disturbed. And you have to stand up and do something," said new volunteer Michael Reeves.

New volunteers plan to be on the streets Friday night.
