Roseville woman dies after road rage with husband ends in crash

Autopsy shows woman died of 'cardiac event' after crash at about 30 miles per hour

ROSEVILLE, Mich. – Roseville police continue to investigate a husband and wife road rage incident that happened in a residential neighborhood near 11 mile and Hayes roads.

Neighbors said the couple started arguing at their house late yesterday afternoon.

"She was standing at the door yelling at him and he was standing next to his minivan yelling back at her. It ain't the first time. I saw her chase him out of the driveway a week ago," said Patrick Boys, who lives across the street.

"My brother's in pain. He loved his wife," said Michael Bergiel.

He said his brother blames himself but should not face criminal charges.

"They argued sometimes, like married couples do," his brother said.

The autopsy shows Diane Bergiel died of a "cardiac event," not from injuries caused by the crash. The Chrysler P.T. Cruiser she was driving hit some guy-wires anchored to the ground and a utility pole.

The damage on the front of the car is minor.  The air bags inside did not deploy.

Dave Bergiel was held by police until Tuesday afternoon, pending the results from toxicology tests on his wife.  That could take weeks. The case then will be reviewed by the Macomb County Prosecutor.

The investigation shows the couple drove side-by-side down narrow residential streets where they live and that Diane started chasing Dave.

But then a few blocks away, police say the investigation shows Dave cut off his wife and she drove off the road toward the utility pole.
