Detroit woman has complaint about Detroit Police Department's virtual precinct system

Tamiko Conner says she can't get ahold of police on phone reporting system

DETROIT – Tamiko Conner says her 17-year old-son is getting death threats after confrontations with other teens.

They moved into Detroit from Dearborn Heights a year and a half ago.

"On his way to school, and somebody is sitting in a lot some where in the weeds and they just shoot him. Or, guys run up to him and like they said, they're going to stab him or they're going to shoot him to death," Tamiko told Local 4's Jim Kiertzner.

She said she's been trying to file a police report but is getting the runaround.

A Local 4 camera followed her to the Detroit Police Department's Central District Precinct Tuesday at 2:25 p.m., and the doors were locked.

No uniform police officer was at the desk.

Another man on the outside looking in was trying to get in and trying to get someone on the phone. This went on for five to 10 minutes.

Once they noticed a TV camera at the door, the commander came to the door and let the Local 4 crew in.

Commander Kenneth Williams explained today's incident should not have happened but it was during a shift change.

All Detroit police precincts are open only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for walk-in police business.

"Virtual" precincts require people to file police reports over the phone.

Conner says when she first tried to call in, she was on the phone for more than a half hour and gave up.

The commander told her off camera today, next time, ask for a manager.

He also added, Conner went in to file her report, then said she had to move her car, left and never came back.

"I still think that the process needs to be changed. That's all" Conner says.

They took her report today.

Detroit Police spokesperson Sgt. Erin Stephens told Local 4 that they will look into the problems outlined and the new precinct hours are only three months old and there are still a few issued to be worked out.

She also asks why this mom waited several more days to file her report.

The number to call during Virtual Precinct hours is 313-267-4600

Police officials admit, the wait can be several minutes when call volumes are heavy.
