Mother, son ordered to stand trial for 12-year-old Detroit girl's death

Kade'jah Davis was shot and killed during a dispute over a cell phone

DETROIT – A 36th District Court Judge has ordered two defendants to stand trial in the Jan. 31 shooting death of a Detroit girl.

Kade'jah Davis was hit by two of at least six bullets fired through her front door. Her mother Almanda Talton testified that the shooting happened moments after 19-year old Joshua Brown knocked on the door.

She said he asked her about a missing cell phone, which Talton said she had found earlier in the day at a tax preparer's residence. Talton said she told Brown she had returned the phone. Brown allegedly opened fire just after she closed the door.

Kade'jah was standing next to her. Stephanie Atkins of the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office testified that two bullets struck the girl from behind. One hit her in the head.

Brown is charged with first degree murder. His 35-year-old mother Heather Brown is accused of being an accessory.

Talton said she saw Heather Brown on the street near her house just before the shooting.

Heather Brown is free on bond. Joshua Brown remains in custody.

Kade'jah Davis was an honor student at University Yes Academy. She was already planning to attend Louisiana State University to play on the school's basketball team while preparing to become a doctor.
