Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League accused of stacking teams to create imbalance

Metro Detroit little league ordered to have redraft after accusations of stacking teams

GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. – The Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League is for 9 through 12 year olds.

The league's most famous prodigy is Prince Fielder, of the Detroit Tigers. It has a proud history.

However, the league now faces accusations that leaders have unfairly stacked teams to create and imbalance.

League vice president, Jim Rini, said the imbalance was intended not to create super teams but to give kids with lesser ability more opportunity by putting them all on the same team.

"It will be more of a balanced team so they will get more playing time," said Rini.

Critics say that's not the case and parents are upset.

"You can't have them all on the same team. They would lose every single game," said parent Tom Lizza. "Although they may play more, what fun is it if you're going to lose every game? You're gonna be 0 and 20."

National Little League Organization steps in

The National Little League Organization agrees with parents such as Lizza. It ordered the Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores league to have a new draft to balance the teams.

"They deliberately tried to skirt the rules to their own benefit," Lizza said. "That's really the sad thing. They're losing sight. There are 375 kids in little league and they're talking about what's best for their 12 on their team, three or four of these guys, and they're forgetting the rest of these kids."

One mother said it's little kids playing baseball and everyone should just remember that.

The redraft was completed and the season is on track to begin soon. However, there are many parents still upset. There will be an informational meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Grosse Pointe Community Center.
