Detroit authorities investigate whether man's murder was missed

Friends told Leslie Brooks died from natural causes, but mortician finds bullet wound in chest

DETROIT – Detroit police are trying to figure out how EMS and officers missed a bullet wound on a man's chest.

Leslie Brooks, 59, was found dead in his basement  room on Detroit's east side on Friday.

When EMS arrived, Brooks' roommate, Latonya Bland, said she was told he had died of natural causes.

But on Sunday, Bland said police were back at the home with a different story.

"I guess he was back to say they didn't do their job right," she said.

A mortician at Cole Funeral home, who was preparing Brooks' body, found the wound.

The Detroit Fire Department told Local 4 medics at the scene had made a "tentative observation" that Brooks had died from natural causes.

Now, a homicide investigation is under way.

Bland said she's worried the potential killer might have gotten a head start because possible evidence from the home could have been destroyed with family and friends going in and out.

A statement from the Detroit Fire Department to Local 4 reads, "Our sympathy is with the family. We wish we could've gotten more accurate information."

The Fire Department is standing by its medics, saying they did everything they were supposed to do.

An internal investigation is also under way within the Detroit Police Department.

Funeral services are set for Friday.
