GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Pom-pon camp held at Davenport University in Grand Rapids was cancelled on Thursday after dozens of girls became seriously ill.
Forty of the 400 students who attended the camp were showing symptoms that pointed to norovirus. Â 16 different schools across the state arrived at Davenport on Tuesday and were forced to leave two days later.
The Kent County Health Department believes a student arrived at the camp with the illness and spread it to others.
Hundreds of high school and middle school pom-pon dancers at the camp helped spray down tables and clean the gym.
Mid American Pompon, a popular pom-pon camp headquartered in Farmington Hills, hosted the camp. The company released this statement to Local 4:
At 3:00 pm on Thursday, June 28, 2012, Mid American Pompon was informed by the Administration at Davenport University that our camp session at Davenport University was being cancelled. We agree that the decision was based on the best interest of the health and welfare of all in attendance.
The camp was originally scheduled for four days and was meant to help pom-pon squads learn new dance routines.
