Detroit apartment complex under siege; residents say crime is out of hand

Residents of Alberta King Apartments want more security

DETROIT – People who live at the Alberta King Apartments on Detroit's near northwest side are watching a big spike in crime.  They know police resources are limited so when they turned to property management for help, they got nothing so they turned to Local 4.

Just weeks ago, 2 men tried to rape an 11 year old girl in the area. Residents say there was another sexual assault and home invasion of a woman living alone in the middle of the night Friday and they've offered to pay more in rent for more security. They say they were told it is too expensive.

Resident Javonna Williams said, "No one has responded. It is just ridiculous. I am afraid for my safety."

Local 4 went to the leasing office and we told the on-site manager was out on Friday. Residents said they did do their own citizen night watch with management's blessing. It ended abruptly and they believe at the hands of teens and young adults who live nearby.

A woman who didn't want to be identified said, "My neighbor next door was patrolling and at 5 in the morning his car got burned up in front of the house."

Local 4 placed a call to management's corporate office. They did not return our phone call.
