Kwame Kilpatrick returns to metro Detroit for a speech at Eastern Michigan

A student group paid to have the former mayor come to their university

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick returned to metro Detroit Tuesday to deliver a speech at Eastern Michigan University.

The group Black Leaders Aspiring to Critical Knowledge, or BLACK, invited Kilpatrick to talk about his rise and fall in Detroit.

Not everyone was excited Kilpatrick was coming to the university, but the president of BLACK, Brian Nwagwo, said "that's the great thing about this country, everybody is entitled to their opinion, freedom of speech. A lot of people are interested in what's going to happen."

Kilpatrick spoke at the Student Center Ballroom.

He avoided questions about his looming federal corruption case and preferred to stick with his own script. Many students said they found his speech inspiring.
